George Vakirtzis usually signs his monogram on the drawings/models for the Giant cinema posters, especially on those that are drawn on rice paper and on those that are to be reproduced by the method of ammonia, so as to be further used by his assistants.
However, he never signs the Giant cinema posters themselves! Only when D. Papastamos, then director of the National Gallery, asks him to donate some of them –whole posters or fragments he has carefully preserved– to the National Gallery, does he sign them: that is, only when he is prompted to look at them as works of art and not merely as décor.
For example, in 1969 he signs the Giant cinema poster piece (No. 4250 in the Collection of the National Gallery) that he had drawn in 1964 for the ATTIKON cinema. It was a poster for the 20th Century Fox film, THE LEOPARD, starring Burt Lancaster and Claudia Cardinale (the film was shown in Greece with the title “THE LEOPARD OF SICILY”).
